Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

In 2026, America will celebrate 250 years of independence — and Philadelphia will be the ultimate destination to experience how far we’ve come since 1776!

Throughout the year, the city will come alive with special events, exhibits, and interactive experiences, giving students countless opportunities to explore the origins of our nation’s traditions and the unique stories that make America so special.

Here’s a glimpse of what’s in store:

52 WEEKS OF FIRSTS

Each week of 2026, Philadelphia will honor different “firsts” that originated in the city, celebrating inventions like the slinky and ice cream soda, services like America’s first children’s hospital, and national holidays like Mother’s Day. Other Philadelphia firsts slated for celebration in 2026 include the first flower show (1827), the first zoo (1874), the first Mummers Parade (1901), the first American flag (1777), the first signing of the United States Constitution (1787) and the first penitentiary (1829).

WE THE PEOPLE

Step into history at the National Constitution Center, where you’ll walk alongside 42 life-size, bronze statues of the framers of the U.S. Constitution in Signer’s Hall. Of course, no trip to Philadelphia is complete without a visit to the iconic Liberty Bell and Independence Hall  the very place where our nation’s founders signed the Declaration of Independence 250 years ago. These iconic sites engage students with the founding ideals that continue to shape our nation today.

SCIENCE COMES TO LIFE

Dive into the world of science and discovery at The Franklin Institute, where the spirit of innovation and curiosity ignited by Benjamin Franklin continues to inspire. Explore interactive exhibits that bring science and technology to life, from hands-on experiments to immersive displays on space, engineering, and physics - it’s the perfect place for budding scientists to continue nourishing their craft!

FESTIVALS, SPORTS GAMES, AND MORE

Throughout the year, Philadelphia will host special events and exhibits, including the ArtPhilly “What Now” festival, featuring city-wide, multidisciplinary arts celebrating America’s history and future. Additionally, the MLB All-Star Game will be held at Citizens Bank Park, bringing together fans from across the country. This city is the place to be in 2026 for all sports fans- it will welcome the FIFA World Cup, NCAA March Madness, the MLB All-Star Game and the PGA Championship.

TED TALKS

On June 13, 2026, Philadelphia will join forces with TED Democracy to present TED Democracy Philadelphia: Founding Futures — a one-day event at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Students will have the opportunity to attend more than a dozen inspiring TED Talks, exploring America’s legacy of independence while envisioning the democratic future we still strive to build. This engaging series offers students a powerful way to reflect on our nation’s past and recognize the enduring importance of this historic anniversary.
