Exploring America: 5 Patriotic Places for Your Next Educational Tour

America’s 249th birthday is just around the corner, and to celebrate, we’re sharing our favorite patriotic tour spots that will get your students excited about American history- and ready to be a part of it.
Though still young compared to other nations, our country has a complex past that can’t be understood through a textbook alone. These five iconic American cities bring history to life; And year after year, as students walk the same streets once traveled by our nation's founders, they leave with deeper knowledge and a stronger sense of what it means to be an American.

Washington D.C.
The most obvious choice, our nation's capital, is visited by about one million students each year and has been the home to countless historic figures and events. We’ve been guiding students through the marvelous landmarks of D.C. since 1965- from the iconic dome of the U.S. Capitol building to the solemn beauty of Arlington National Cemetery. One of our favorite spots to highlight is the People’s House, a new replica of the White house that tells the stories of presidents past, and explores the many personalities that help operate the mansion's daily functions. D.C. offers a variety of different museums, including one of the most renowned in the world, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. From touristy spots to hidden gems, each student will find something that speaks to them when visiting this historic city. Even after countless trips, there is always something new to discover.

Boston
Known as the birthplace of the American Revolution, Boston continues to be a city full of energy, character, and deep historical significance.
Boston brings together the past and present, with Colonial architecture tucked away in lively neighborhoods and a culture that is greatly rooted in it's revolutionary origins. The city was formerly home to many historical figures, including John Adams, Malcolm X, and Edgar Allen Poe; These national notables live on through landmarks and memorials visited by millions of travelers each year. Many tourists enjoy walking along the freedom trail, starting at Boston Common and ending at the Bunker Hill Monument. Along the way, they visit the home of Paul Revere, the resting place of John Hancock, and the quaint school attended by Benjamin Franklin.
No trip to Boston is complete without a visit to the Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum, an immersive experience that tells the story of the iconic protest that eventually ignited the American Revolution.
Other notable Boston tour sites include the Museum of Fine Arts, the Museum of Science, and the New England Aquarium.
Philadelphia

Philadelphia has been a timeless tour destination for educators looking to provide students with a taste of American history. After visiting, students go home with a deeper understanding of our country's foundations, as well as the importance of civic engagement and cultural heritage.
Independence Hall is one of Philadelphia's most revered historical sites; It's the meeting hall where our nation's founders debated, created, and signed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Students visit the assembly room, where they learn about the history of the building and it's important role in our country's foundations. The Franklin Institute is another impactful tour spot, where the innovation and curiosity of Benjamin Franklin lives on through students who explore the museum.
Next year, Philadelphia will be more active than ever; To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the city will host a variety of special events, including an MLB All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park.
New York

In this “Melting Pot” of America, different cultures combine to create a vibrant hub for art, entertainment, and education. While well-known for its exciting city life, there is also a rich and powerful history embedded in the city of New York- and an energy you can't find anywhere else.
On a tour, students can start their day by visiting historical landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, where millions of immigrants first stepped onto American soil. In Manhattan, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum offers a look into one of our nation's most monumental tragedies, allowing travelers to honor the lives lost at the Twin Towers and learn more about that pivotal moment of American history. For a touch of excitement, take a walk through bustling Wall Street, the heart of America’s financial system, or finish your night with a Broadway show in the most theatrical place in the world.
New York offers something for people of all interests, and students find the city to be a fun, engaging environment that brings their classroom lessons to life.

North Dakota - Mount Rushmore
Mount Rushmore is arguably one of the most breathtaking monuments of American history, and it's often overlooked when deciding on a spot for an educational tour. After learning about these important figures in school, seeing the massive dedication our nation's founders makes it easier to grasp their massive impact on each American that lives freely today. The Presidential Trail alongside the monument offers close-up views of the magnificent rock, and great vantage points for photos. This work of art is without a doubt worth the journey to North Dakota, and the state also offers some other hidden-gem educational sites that will make you understand just why this location is so important to American history.
Out West, many tourists visit the Fort Union Trading post, where Indian tribes and European fur traders peacefully traded goods before smallpox tore through the region. North Dakota also offers many hiking adventures, including the Lewis and Clarke Historic Trail. Here, visitors can walk the path of the the iconic pair, and see where they overcame various challenges on their journey to the pacific ocean.
